Rhys off to world championships

08 Apr, 2009 02:00 AM
Former 19 year old Two Rocks swimmer, Rhys Mainstone, will be heading to Rome in mid July to compete in the FINA World Championships.

Rhys was recently placed second in the 10 kilometre event securing his selection in the Australian team.

Over the past two years Ryhs has competed and won or been placed in at least five long distance events including the Perth to Rottnest swim.

In mid March, Rhys finished second to Trent Grimsey with a time of 1 hour 55.09, only 23 seconds behind the winner.

National open water head coach, Greg Towie, was impressed with Mainstone’s swim.

When Rhys was at Yanchep Primary School he could hardly swim ten metres, now after several great seasons with the City of Perth club he is considered a strong medal contender.
