No V8s this year

11 Feb, 2010 07:48 AM
This year’s V8 Supercars event in Perth has been cancelled after motorsport bosses and the WA Sporting Car Club failed to resolve issues surrounding the Barbagallo raceway.

The move will be a massive embarrassment to the State Government and Minister for Sport, Terry Waldron, who held meetings with V8 bosses during the event late last year and vowed to keep the sport in Western Australia.

Prior to the 2009 races last November, the State Government announced a $5 million upgrade of the Barbagallo track in 2009, but deferred a full $50 million revamp of the raceway.

V8 Supercars Australia chairman, Tony Cochrane, indicated some four years ago that he preferred racing on the streets of Perth.

Mr Cochrane said it costs the competition $2.5 million to come to WA every year and the teams were not prepared to race on the unsafe Barbagallo raceway circuit.

This event attracts tens of thousands of fans to Barbagallo each year, and currently there is only a slight hope that WA fans will see live V8 action in the future.

The V8 Supercar Championship Series starts next week, 18th - 20th February, in Abu Dhabi with the Yas V8 400 followed by the Gulf Air Desert 400, on 25th - 27th February, in Bahrain.

The cancelled Perth Super V8 championship event has been transferred to Ipswich on 30th April to 2nd May.
