14 Jan, 2010 10:03 AM
Yanchep Red Hawks’ 2009 football season was wound up late last year with the annual ‘Gunner Medal’ presentation night, being held at the Yanchep Inn.

About 70 players, members and supporters enjoyed pre-dinner drinks, a ‘Red Carpet’ entrance, season highlights, entertaining player interviews and a sumptuous meal.

The Gunner Medal recognises the fairest and best player for the club each year and continues the acknowledgement of the area’s first football club, Yanchep Hawks.

With two teams this year, the Dan Toomath Medal was inaugurated for the fairest and best player in the Division 2 team.

This award recognised Dan’s contribution to the club.

Encouragingly, two of the top three players in the Division 1 team and all three place getters in the Division 2 team played junior football with the local Yanchep club.

Award winners on the night were: Division 1, fairest and best ‘Gunner Medal’ - Lee McQuillan; runner-up fairest and best - Luke Roberts; most consistent award - Neville Luff; coaches trophy - Cameron James; best defender - Kyle Morgan; best utility - Nick Martin; best in finals - Mark Alderton; and, the Shane George medal, leading goal kicker - Hamish Sturrock with 113 goals.

Division 2, fairest and best ‘Dan Toomath medal’ - Alan Cope; runner-up fairest and best - Jack Ingram; most consistent award - Brendan Murphy; coaches trophy - Liam Grant; best defender - Damian Price; most improved - Grantley Strydom; and, leading goal kicker - Daniel Healy.

Club awards The Todd Stafford Memorial Trophy was presented to Lee McQuillan; club trophy - Chris Ingram; the Clark Scrivener award 2009 - Hamish Sturrock; and the OOO award - Hamish Sturrock.

Life memberships were awarded to Shelley Stafford for her valuable contribution to the club over many years and to Anthony Holland for 150 games as a player.

Pre-season training for 2010 will be starting late January, early February. Watch for signs and notices in the Sun City News.

New players are most welcome, it is expected the Yanchep Red Hawks will once again field two teams.

The club is still looking for good people to join the committee as secretary and treasurer. Contact Graham on 0429 672 620 or ghailsto@bigpond.net.au for any queries.
