Gingin out of finals

Both the Gingin Eagles seniors and reserves were knocked out of the Mortlock Football League first semi-finals, last week.

The Gingin seniors were simply flogged by Goomalling. The final score was 20.18 (138) to 5.14 (44).

Goomalling goal kickers were: Dean Brennan (6), Warren O’Neil (2), Dane Leeson (2), James Leeming (2), Elliott Fitts (2) with Bryan Phillips, Benajamin White, Jason Siekierka, Riley Clarke, Brett Speldewinde and Callen Syred, one goal each.

Gingin goal kickers were: Geoffrey Rouse (3), Reece Phoenix and Wayne Smith, one goal each.

Best players for Goomalling were: Bryan Phillips, Dean Brennan, Brett Speldewinde, Mark Malaspina and Benajamin White.

Gingin’s best players were Daniel Maloney, Craig Northcott, Christian Kelly, Shaun Kay, Martin Nathaniel, and Jacob Akemens.

Goomalling and Gingin finished the league season third and fourth respectively on the final league ladder, both with nine wins and five losses, only percentage separated them.

Head to head during the season the score was one-one. In round five, Gingin beat Goomalling by 17 points while in round 12 Goomalling chalked up a 70 point win.

Everyone was expecting a tough close game, but Goomalling jumped out of the blocks kicking five goals, seven points to Gingin’s one gaol, two points in the first quarter, and the game was all over.

Gingin never really challenged Goomalling and they have progressed to the preliminary final on Sunday, 30th August, at Wongan Ballidu.

In the reserves, Gingin lost in a nail-biter losing to Calingiri by only three points. The final score was Calingiri 9.12 (66) to Gingin 10.3 (63).

Calingiri goal kickers were: Thomas Jones (2), Revben Woods (2) with Jarrod Martin, Shaun Westlake, Gary Stewart, Nick Stienhouse and Edmund Forrester, one goal each.

Gingin goal kickers were: Brendon Rouse (4), Jarrad Sewell (3) with Peter Bernt, Adam Trinder and Jesse Baker, one gaol each.

Calingiri’s best players were: Edmund Forrester, Russell Brennan, Scott Piper, Gregory Ziere, Michael Smith and Revben Woods.

Gingin’s best players were: Graeme Maloney, Ben East, Ashley Martin, Jarrad Sewell and Mitchell Cocking.

The reserves game was played in two halves. Only three points separated the two sides at the end of the first quarter. Gingin got their team work going and kicked five goals in the second quarter to Calingiri’s two to lead by 16 points at half time.

The third quarter saw Gingin kick another two goals and keep Calingiri to just two points.

The final quarter saw a total reverse, Calingiri kicked five goals five points to Gingin’s single goal.

Calingiri run out three point winners and have now set themselves to play in the first preliminary final on 30th August.

Gingin and Calingiri finished the reserve season with six wins and six losses each, Gingin reserves held third position on the ladder with a 50 percent higher percentage.

Head to head during the home and away games the games were one win each. In round three Gingin defeated Calingiri by 99 points, then in round 10, Calingiri reversed the score to win by 38 points.

Overall the Gingin Eagles Football Club and many supporters are disappointed with this year’s finish.

At the start of the season Gingin Football Club was very hopeful of a highly successful 2009 season in both the seniors and reserves, with an eye for this year’s premiership.

Dowerin Football Club has a chance to win both the League and Reserve premiership in early September.
