Yanchep Redhawks Cricket Club G Grade team were successful in winning the North Suburban Cricket Community Association Premiership in the G Grade division.
After taking out the flag in the one day leg of the season, Yanchep Redhawks G Grade, completed the double by taking out the flag for the ultimate prize in the overall two day competition.
After finishing the season on top of the ladder and taking out the minor premiership, Yanchep Redhawks successfully negated the semi final against Joondalup Kinross with a convincing victory to earn the right to host the grand final at their beloved home ground Oldham Oval against this year’s arch rivals Osborne Park.
With the game to be played over four days, two weekends, it was set up to be a memorable game.
On day one, Yanchep Redhawks’ captain, Charlie Holmes, won the toss and sent Osborne Park into bat, something that we have done all year.
With some accurate bowling and exceptional fielding, Yanchep were able to restrict Osborne Park to 125.
Special mention must go to Yanchep’s opening bowlers Adam Hawton who bowled without luck, Nic Edmeades for his great spell, New Zealander recruit, T. Timoko, for his pace which upset the batsmen, and Charlie Holmes who has had the wood over most batsmen during the season, for their efforts to limit the opposition to 125.
Yanchep Redhawks’ first innings got of the a great start with Marcus Ribbons batting a solid 75. Nic Edmeades with 35, assisted the tail. Most of the batsmen contributed to help Yanchep Redhawks compile a total of 213 after stumps on day two.
On day three with a first innings lead of 87, it was still anyone's game.
Not to be denied, Osborne Park had a solid start and after 20 overs, were one for 51 and looking to post a score to send the game into a fourth day, a strong bowling attack pushed Yanchep Redhawks to the end.
After the break, Yanchep Redhawks continued to apply the pressure and picked up some early wickets, only to see Osborne Park collapse for 95 due to some good bowling by Vaughan Dean, who picked up six wickets for 15 runs.
This left Osborne Park with a lead of 10 runs and they opted not to continue and Yanchep Redhawks G Grade Premiers 2009/2010, were already starting to celebrate.
It was a great team effort and just reward for Yanchep’s commitment over what was along season and special tribute to their wives and girlfriends who put up with the players during the year.
A special thanks to the Yanchep sponsors, too many to name, this is their flag as well and without their support this would not have happened.
To the committee, players of all grades D,G and the one day team, scorers, waterboys, the future players from the Yanchep Redhawks Junior Cricket Club, who filled in when we were short namely Nathan Dunn, Ryan and Peter Murphy who his dad, Spud, was so proud of, all the supporters for their invaluable commitment during the year and every boy that assisted during the year.
