From 12th to18th September, Yanchep ten year old, Kurtis Mathews, represented Western Australia competing at the 2009 National All Schools Diving Championships.
This alone was a huge achievement considering Kurtis only started diving in April of this year.
The competition saw Kurtis achieve some fantastic results, coming 4th in the ten year old boys springboard event.
He was a little disappointed that he did not get a medal but when he looked at the big picture and saw that he was fourth in the whole of Australia, he was very proud of his achievement.
In the 10-12 year boys synchronised event he was partnered with another Western Australian representative and they came 6th overall. This was a great result considering they were the only team of ten year olds, all the other competitors were older.
Kurtis dives with Arrows Dive Club at Challenge Stadium, waking at 4.30am to train each morning. He would like to represent Australia in diving at the Olympics.
As summer approaches Kurtis has also started little athletics.
He is the current under 10 boys state champion for the 1100 metre track race walk and the current under 10 state champion for the under 10 two kilometre road race walk.
Kurtis would like to thank everyone who supported him during the national diving championships.
Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets and especially to his sponsors Karen Rowe, Coastal & Country Realty, Gingin Quality Meats, Yanchep Two Rocks Recreation Association, Aussie Fire Shelters and International Exporters, who made the experience possible for this young athlete.
