Strong response to Yanchep survey

11 Mar, 2010 01:18 PM
Response to the recent Yanchep Boardwalk survey has had a good response from Yanchep residents.

Deputy mayor, Tracey Roberts, said: “The Yanchep Boardwalk survey was the most comprehensive community consultation undertaken by the City of Wanneroo.”

“We sent a survey to every resident on the state and local government voting roll and landowners on the city’s roll; and followed up with residents who did not appear on either roll; as well as conducting several information sessions for residents,” she said.

“We gave as many people as possible the chance to have their say.”

Cr Roberts also assured residents that they would have the opportunity to be briefed in full on the results before the matter is formally considered by council.

After the results of the responses are compiled and analysed, market research company Catalyse will conduct a full briefing to residents at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 30th March, at the Phil Renkin Centre in Two Rocks.

Following briefing of the community, the results of the survey are expected to be considered by Council at its meeting on 6 April, subject to input from the WA Planning Commission.

“This is a strong response and the city believes that all residents in Yanchep have a right to comment on the boardwalk and Catalyse assures us it has a ‘robust and representative’ sample of the population,” Cr Roberts said.

Catalyse director, Lisa Lough, confirmed that researchers considered the number of returns a good result.

Ms Lough said the samples of 688 people have an associated sampling error of plus or minus 3.7 percent at the 95 percent confidence interval.

“For example, this means if 50 percent of survey respondents support one option over another, we would be fairly certain, at the 95 percent confidence interval, that between 46.3 percent and 53.7 percent of the population supports this option,” she said.

“Following data entry, results would be analysed to determine which of the options is the most popular and the reasoning for this.

“Further, we will examine whether preferences vary across the community depending on proximity to the boardwalk as well as other demographic groupings such as age or gender.”

Cr Roberts encouraged the community to attend the Catalyse information session on the outcomes of the survey.

“This will provide community members an opportunity to be briefed on the survey and the results,” she said.

Do we really need this gobbledegook, if 344 out of 688 people vote for one option, carried, end of story.
