More doctors needed

22 Jul, 2010 10:42 AM
North of Butler along the coastal strip to Lancelin there are only two doctors providing medical services to close to 10,000 residents. This is one of the worst doctor to patient ratios in the country.

It would appear the problem is only going to get worse, as the population continues to increase at a record pace.

The federal and state government do not appear to have any plans to address the problem in the near future.

No new doctor Medicare numbers are currently allocated to this region.

Eight years ago, the region did not have a doctor until the Two Rocks Yanchep Residents Association spent two years getting a Medicare number allocated to the area to attract a doctor.

With the current bitterly cold weather, many local residents cannot get a doctor’s appointment and are being told to try medical centres closer to Perth CBD or go to Joondalup hospital.

A super clinic has been proposed in Wanneroo, but this could be canned, depending on the upcoming federal election results.
