Local and international wave sailors competed in the Lancelin Ocean Classic and had a great time on the waves despite having light wind conditions.
In the elite men and women’s divisions, 35 sailors took to the waves to out-manoeuvre each other with the highest aerials and radical wave sailing.
While the results of the day’s wave sailing won’t be announced until the presentation on Saturday, event MC, Rob Goyen, said: “The competitors enjoyed their time out on the water with conditions better than expected.”
“It was great to see the old and the new, with former world champion, Scott McKercher up against young world beater, Jaeger Stone,” Goyen said.
Geraldton resident, and last years’ winner, Jaeger Stone and former world champion, Scott McKercher battled it out in the final. Third and fourth place is between last years second runner up, Ben Severne and British wave sailing championship, Ben Proffitt.
Competitors to watch in the women’s division included Laure Treboux of Switzerland who is currently the number two Freestyle in the world and Geraldton resident, Kirra Young.
Favourable conditions are expected for the main Marathon event on Saturday, with organisers anticipating between three and four hundred competitors to line up to compete in the 26km event, all hoping to win a share of the $25,000 prize pool.
The Lancelin Ocean Classic wraps up on Sunday with the high-speed Slalom events.
Presented by KineticIT, The Lancelin Ocean Classic has been held since 1986 and is Australia’s longest running windsurfing event. It is made possible thanks to the enthusiastic support of the Lancelin community, Eventscorp, KineticIT, Shire of Gingin and Bendigo Bank.
Lancelin’s population of 800 can swell to 4000 over the four day event, with competitors, spectators, media and supporters descending on the crayfishing town, which boasts long stretches of white beaches ideal for all forms of watersports.
