Dune disaster

01 Jul, 2009 02:00 AM
Winter erosion of our beaches is a common occurrence along the Western Australian coastline, but parts of Two Rocks and Seabird foreshore are eroding faster than experts anticipated.

Some residents in the Yachting Village at Two Rocks are fearful the recent erosion, winter storms and winds have made the foreshore extremely dangerous.

Whole areas of cascading sand have caused an avalanche bringing down the stabilising vegetation and some fencing.

A week prior to the recent sand slide, storm winds saw other large sand cliffs collapse into the water.

About ten years ago the City of Wanneroo council report suggested that they had 15 years before the area needed attention.

One Yachting Village resident stated: “A few years ago the council said it would be safe for 15 years, I suggest with the rate of erosion it should be much sooner.”

Another Two Rocks resident suggested the beach line had eroded at least five metres in the past two years.
