The tower in Marchwood Park, Butler was constructed in 2001/2002 by the Satterley Property Group to assist in the promotion of the Butler sub-division. Responsibility of the park and tower was handed over to the City of Wanneroo who have been receiving complaints from local residents since 2003.
A recent condition report demonstrates that the tower poses a safety risk to surrounding buildings, the community and users of the structure.
In March 2009, the City of Wanneroo wrote to the Satterley Property Group requesting they pay for the removal of the tower structure. The developer’s response was that they believed that all costs involved in the removal of the tower should be incurred by the council.
The removal cost has been estimated at just under $30,000. At Tuesday night’s council meeting it is expected that council will approve the removal of the tower through an expressions of interest (EOI) process.
This will enable interested parties the opportunity to submit their proposal, either to remove or reuse the structure. If the EOI process is successful it has the potential to relieve the removal cost from council. Coastal ward councillor, Tracey Roberts, suggested at the briefing session that maybe the Quinns Surf Life Saving Club might have found its beach watch tower.
