55 years of volunteering

22 Dec, 2011 01:07 PM
Last week, Lancelin St John Ambulance Group presented John ‘Jock’ Swan with a 55 years of volunteering service certificate at a special dinner.

Mr Swan’s involvement with volunteering with St John started in Harvey in 1956.

In 1956, Jock became a member of the 1st Harvey Brigade serving with them for a period of nine years and being nominated as top driver for two consecutive years.

During those years Jock was also involved in the Harvey Fire Brigade as well as building his own home.

In 1965, moving from Harvey to Meckering Jock became involved in Cunderdin Ambulance but, because of work commitments, was not as active as he would have liked.

Then in 1967, Jock, joined Kununoppin, where he immediately became secretary of an almost non-existent branch, obtained his Instructor’s certificate and set about teaching First Aid in Beacon, Bencubbin, Trayning and Kununoppin while pushing to raise funds for ambulances in each of these towns.

In 1969, Jock became actively involved in the Merredin Sub-Centre as a driver and became a cadet officer with a cadet corpse of 32. He trained them for competition work and at the same time he was involved in competition with the brigade and the Railway Ambulance Brigade.

Then in 1976, Jock resigned from the railways and bought a business in Perenjori where he worked seven days a week.

He immediately joined the Ambulance there and set about fundraising with cabarets at New Year.

The highlight of his fundraising in Perenjori was a grand debutante ball when 18 debs were presented to the state president, Dr Hugh le Bruten.

Jock took on all official positions during the eleven years he was in Perenjori, and was granted serving brother and was made a life member of the cub-centre.

Jock came to Lancelin in 1987, and joined the local branch of St John, and in the same year immediately took a position on the committee.

He has since been appointed to the job of secretary, treasurer and vice chairman. He still holds a position on the committee today.

Jock has been an active member at Lancelin ever since in the form of driver, ambulance officer and fundraiser. He is also a life member of the Lancelin & Coastal District Sub-Centre.

Even though ill health curtailed his active participation in ambulance duties, Jock battled back to continue his marvellous efforts in fundraising.

He continues to raise several thousands of dollars yearly collecting aluminium cans and running other fundraising
