Petition calls for Bert and Ernie to be married

Petition calls for Bert and Ernie to be married

- Article originally posted at TheVine.com.au

Sesame Street's unofficial couple, Bert and Ernie, are being urged to make it official.

Debate over their relationship status has endured since the duo first appeared in 1969. Sesame Street says they're just best friends, "created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves."

An online petition - at 3,700 signatures at time of writing - is now calling for the long time friends to be married. The petition is seeking to teach tolerance and acceptance by either allowing Bert and Ernie to wed, or to look to include an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) character into the childrens show.

Sesame Street has always sent a progressive message to its viewers, having introduced different races and cultures to the show and acknowledged a HIV-positive Muppet, but the idea of a gay wedding seems to have angered many.

Bullying in the LGBT community has become an even bigger issue in recent months and this led to the launch of the It Gets Better project late last year as a response to the startling number of teen suicides in America. It has since received a lot of celebrity support.

Comments on Twitter and on other articles today indicate exactly the kind of problems these campaigns face, which is namely homophobia.

"I don't mind gays. But I draw the line here. I don't want Australia to promote being gay to my kids."

"This is a kid's program with puppet characters, but certain people with weird ideas want to turn it into something that's quite sickening to normal people."

The fact is that it's 2011 and gay people actually do exist in real life and moreover, they can be quite normal. So whether this is a 'joke' petition or not, it surely can't hurt to talk about making Sesame Street a queer friendly place so that each and every kid out there can know that they're not the only one looking like they look or feeling like they feel.

Although Jezebel asks, "Is it even worth showing a gay marriage to kids if it's not even real? Maybe we should try to concentrate our efforts on allowing gays to legally wed throughout our entire country."

To which I say, hear hear! But I think I'll leave the last word to Mr Maupin:

"The folks who fret that a wedding between Bert and Ernie would "sexualize" a kids' show were remarkably silent about a frog porking a pig."

I think gays are grasping at straws if they think bert n ernie are going to make kids accept homosexuality.

No doubt kids who watch B&E just look at them as two mates. I just don't understand why they have to sexualise everything. Surely kids can turn on seame street without having sex whether hetro or homo pushed onto them. and how are they going to promote B&E homosexuality without bringing sex into it? Surely they wont use stereotypical gay behaviour will they?

What a load of crap. I lived with my best mate for years, stuffed if I'll marry him. I wish those P.C. whacks would keep there ideas to themselves

Total crap, keep your homosexual filth to yourselves and allow children to have a normal male to female relationship.

I grew up with my mother constantly telling us it was Big Bird who was gay, and that certainly didn't harm my sister and I in anyway, if anything it made us except everyone for who they are.

I certainly never looked at them like they were just two mates. They are as gay as a $2 bill, wed them now.

Can't the Gay community for once in their miserable lives leave children's programs to children ? I, for one am getting mighty fed up of their push .

God made Adam and Eve , not Adam and Steve ! It takes a man and woman to create a child, not 2 men having sex together and certainly not 2 women having sex together , leave our children alone !

To `straight as a dye'. It's `accept' as in acknowledging another person's different values, not `except' as in excluding someone.

They can't even leave the puppets alone without inflicting their sexual preferences onto them. What next!

This proves without a doubt the peadophilic intent of the homosexual lobby. I

Ricky Gervias once noted at a march in Britain for the lowering of the age of consent to 16 for homosexual acts, that no 16 year old were present, just mostly middle aged to old men.

Is there nothing these perverts won't drag down to there level? Who is next, Tintin and Captain Haddock? Oh of course, Haddocks is a sailot, Tintin has never had a girl in any of his books and they live in the same house. Oh, of course they must be gay!

The level of acceptance of sodomy is an indication of societies decline.

I grew up watching sesame street and now have 4 kids that love watching it so for over 20yrs i have been watching sesame street and it didn't even cross my mind once that bert and ernie are gay and i have grown up with a gay uncle who has a boyfriend. I am not against gay marriage i am all for it but just because 2 mates sleep in the same room does not mean they should get married. Think about all those that go to uni and board there the same sex boards there but people dont go around saying they should marry. Leave bert and ernie as they are...

I agree that it's a BIG load of crap. Come on. So does that mean that two people of the same sex live together are gay. My god, it's a kids show. Come on people, wake up to yourselves.
