Gillard on population: no numbers, no substance and no solutions

Julia Gillard says she wants a population policy, but it's sounding more like a population placebo.

Her opening position is that she does not want a ''big Australia''. She tells us that ''hurtling towards a big Australia is not only undesirable. It is irresponsible.

''If you elect me on August 21, our country will take the path to a sustainable population. I will focus on preserving the quality of life of our Australian sanctuary.''

OK. So what is a sustainable population?

The Prime Minister doesn't want to tell us. She doesn't want to debate the overall size of the population: ''I don't think we should be nominating a number.'' She seems to want to host a debate rather than supply an answer: ''I urge you all to contribute to the national population strategy we are developing.''

All right. Which parts of population policy does she want us to discuss? The birthrate?

No. Gillard says that it is a matter of individual choice how many children we might want to have. No debate there.

So it must be about immigration, right? But no. ''This isn't about immigration,'' she said yesterday.

She doesn't want to debate that, either.

So if it's not about birthrates, and it's not about immigration, perhaps Gillard knows of some other, secret source of population in the fifth dimension.

Because in the known universe, there are only two, and she has now ruled out debating either.

So what on earth is she talking about? She's happy to pose questions, to sound deeply concerned, as she did in a major speech on Tuesday: ''Can we really ask western Sydney to keep absorbing hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people without regard for the key issue of quality of life?''

But her answers are hollow, as she went on to demonstrate: ''I am determined to answer this question in a constructive way, in a real way. I choose my words very carefully when I say this: let's slow down, let's take a breath and let's get this right.''

And that's it.

So this is not a policy, and it's not even a debate about possible policy. It's just a placebo, a sugar pill for the electorate to suck during an election campaign, to keep it happy and quiet. And when the placebo dissolves, nothing is solved.

She has asked her Minister for Sustainable Population, Tony Burke, to write a policy: ''If returned to government, Tony will be releasing a strategy paper later this year for sustainable population growth.''

It's a broad-spectrum placebo that she can pop into your mouth if you open it to ask a question about asylum seekers or immigration or housing or congestion. This allows her to sound concerned, sympathetic, but avoid anything hard, like a real policy.

So suck on that.

This analysis is spot on - a 'broad-spectrum placebo', I love it. So where is the real substance in Julia Gillard? Is there any at all?

She says that she wants to make a sustainable australia - but yet confirmed she will not stop migration. She has made having children more affordable by implimenting the paid maternity scheme - so how exactly will she create a sustainable population? I am glad others are startin to see this too!

Well if Julia has no substance we are all in real trouble because Phoney Tony certainly has no substance and after all it will be either one of them on 22 August.

I see that $200M has been allocated NATIONALLY to assist regional areas with the population growth. Wow, incredible, nationally? The new round-a-bout in South Windsor on George St that was deemed a black spot cost over $420,000. A round-a-bout where I travel daily year in year out and have never seen an accident nor shattered glass on the pavement. Who asked for this to be put there? The federal money is going to last all of 3 seconds at that rate.

Gillard has probably got China's one-child-policy in mind.....

The last refuge for scoundrels may well be found in this piece of journalistic issue, concerning climate change. The author of this piece of nonsense, would have us all believe that even if man is making significant contributions to global warming, we'll thats okay, because global warming is probably good for us. This wedging political subliminal assertion, like all the others, continue to contradict the unanimous view of the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change. Gillard has told us on countless occasions that she believe the science informing us about climate change. And she has defended Australian Scientists work and reports. Unlike Abbott who reportedly referred to our Scientists work as "crap". But then this piece of journalistic license makes the point: to sow doubt.

I don't think she has been able to make herself clear on this issue because the Labor power brokers have not told her what position she should take yet. To me she seems to be a bit of a puppet and relies on generalised terms like "sustainable population" and "moving forward" rather than articulating what she actually intends to do. It was the same thing Kev 07 did with "working families" in his campaign but I guess it worked. I just wish both sides would give the electorate something other than spin for a change.

Simple solution. Do not vote for liberal or labor. Make a protest and vote minor party or independent.

how is the policy of moving people out of the inner suburbs in the outer suburbs going to create a more sustainable sydney, as fast as you move one person out there would be another ten to take their place, lies lies and spin more grand ideas.

This is a copy of the arrogance and spin Rudd displayed before the 07 election and while he was in office. Gillard, like Rudd, has these brainwaves and without a thought on how to implement it (that's what public servants are for) announces it as policy.
